On July 9, the Glee alum shared several pictures on Instagram, including a tattoo she recently got in memory of her co-star, who passed away in July 2020. The ink, which is done in delicate script lettering against her forearm, reads “tomorrow is not promised.” The phrase is an homage to one of Naya’s final tweets prior to her disappearance last summer, when the actor wrote, “No matter the year, circumstance, or strifes everyday you’re alive is a blessing. Make the most of today and every day you are given. Tomorrow is not promised.”
Heather’s post also contained a photo of Naya, along with a moving caption honoring her friend and co-star. “You are the brightest star in my eyes Naya Rivera,” she wrote. “I’m so grateful GOD LAYED A HAND and brought us together as best friends, mom friends, scene partners, and everything in between. Your legacy lives on in kindness and being ‘that sassy queen’ in my eyes. I love you forever bebe girl.”
Naya was reported missing on July 9, 2020 after renting a boat with her four-year-old son Josey on California’s Lake Piru. Her body was recovered on July 13, where authorities later confirmed her death from accidental drowning after she and Josey had gone for a swim in the lake. Police officials reported that Naya “mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself.”
The actor’s death was widely mourned by both celebrities and the public. Many of Naya’s former Glee costars shared stories of their time together on set, and the cast even reunited earlier this year to pay tribute to her memory. At the time of her passing, Heather was one of many celebrities to share a moving statement about the loss, sharing with fans how much Naya meant to her.
“You constantly taught me lessons about grief, about beauty and poise, about being strong, resilient and about not giving a f*ck,” Heather wrote at the time. “Yet, the utmost important lesson I learned most of all from you was being a consistent and loving friend…. I speak to you everyday because I know you’re still with me and even though I’m feeling greedy that we don’t get more time together, I cherish every moment we had and hold it close to my heart.”
