Willow Smith — aka WILLOW — had a surprise in store for fans this weekend: a live performance combined with a dramatic haircut.
Amid Friday’s Facebook Live event in celebration of her fourth studio album, lately i feel EVERYTHING, which features the likes of Avril Lavigne and Travis Barker, Willow broke out into a punk rock rendition of her iconic track “Whip My Hair.” But the new version of her hit song wasn’t the only treat for her viewers; while singing, she was joined onstage by a person holding a pair of clippers. And then, icon that she is, Willow continued rocking out while she had her entire head shaved right there onstage.
Of course, Willow is no stranger to drastic hair changes in front of a live audience. The musician previously shaved her head onstage in 2012 during her Whip My Hair tour, when she was 11 years old.
In a 2018 interview with InStyle, Willow reflected on the iconic moment, describing the choice as an act of rebellion. “I was just over it,” she explained at the time. “The truth of the song is ‘do want you want;’ it doesn’t actually have to do with hair. ‘Whip your hair’ is just a symbol for doing whatever you want. So in a way, I feel like it wasn’t even a rebellion because the song was saying that, and I was doing whatever I wanted and just being wild — but obviously, it was a rebellion to people who thought it meant something different. I was just over it; I was literally so done and said, ‘I’m going to show people that I’m not attached to this.’”
Willow’s bold choices and confident outlook on life have been an inspiration to those around her; her mom, Jada Pinkett Smith just recently debuted her own shaved head after opening up about her struggles with hair loss. In an Instagram post debuting her freshly buzzed look, Jada announced: “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go.”
As noted by BuzzFeed, Friday’s concert actually marks the third time that Willow has shaved her head — and each time has been for a special reason. As Willow herself said: “I’m always shaving my head at monumental times in my life, when things are really changing, and this is one of those moments.”
