The Power of Plus Celebrates First Anniversary With #PowerfullyMe Campaign

When fashion writers Gianluca Russo and Shammara Lawrence launched The Power of Plus in July 2020, they hoped to create the kind of space they wish they had while growing up: A size-inclusive digital community aimed at promoting “style, respect, and love for every body.”

“We wanted to be able to provide that for other people,” Gianluca tells Teen Vogue. “There were so many conversations surrounding plus-size fashion that we were having in the whispers, but not in the mainstream. As two people living in two different versions of marginalized bodies, we wanted to create a platform where people could have these conversations that are sometimes considered taboo. We wanted a place that felt super-accepting while allowing people to be represented and heard in a way they might not have felt before.”

One year later, The Power of Plus has amassed over 13,000 followers on Instagram, where Gianluca and Shammara continue to share infographics and resources designed to promote conversation around size-inclusivity, body diversity, and the real-life experiences of the plus-size community. Add in frequent panels featuring prominent voices in the plus-size fashion world, a book due in 2022, and a slew of upcoming virtual events, and there’s clearly much to celebrate. “Having this community is so inspiring because it helps you navigate a world that often looks down on people who are above a sample size,” Shammara says. “It’s been fulfilling and heartwarming to see how engaged our community has been since we launched last July, and we’re so excited to see The Power of Plus grow into this go-to resource for people in marginalized bodies.”

To honor their first anniversary, The Power of Plus is kickstarting a social media campaign with the hashtag #PowerfullyMe — a callback to the overarching mission surrounding their initial launch. As Gianluca explains, the past year has been filled with uncertainty and stress amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and he wants to encourage others to feel empowered once again. “Coming off of the year we’ve had, so many of us feel broken down,” he says. “We feel trapped. We all want to feel powerful again, and there are many different ways to do that, whether it’s through social justice or activism, or just being part of a really tight-knit community. What we really want to celebrate is that every single member of our community is different; there’s something about each of them that makes them feel strongest and most confident and most powerful. And when we all celebrate that together, we open the doors for more people to step into their own power.”

The Power of Plus’s official relaunch starts on July 19 with a celebratory video of the #PowerfullyMe mission, featuring a group of trailblazing voices in the plus-size fashion industry like Mina Gerges, Gabi Gregg, Nicolette Mason, Lauren Chan, Kristine Thompson, Meg Boggs, Sesali Bowen, Sean Taylor, and Lydia Okello. The PoP brand also encourages others to participate in the trend by sharing their stories using the #PowerfullyMe hashtag, in what will hopefully be a celebration of confidence and authenticity. “We want to showcase just how powerful and beautiful and how diverse being plus is,” Shammara adds. “There isn’t just one way to look.”

While Instagram is a great place for promoting conversation along with shareable, bite-sized content, The Power of Plus is looking ahead to a wider digital and IRL presence. In addition to their relaunch campaign, the brand is gearing up to unveil a website that will eventually feature a collection of resources tailor-made for the plus-size community.
