Lorde, Lil Nas X, SB19, and More Best New Music

Below, check out the week in new releases, featuring Lil Nas X, Tinashe, Lorde, and more.

Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow, “Industry Baby”

Internet king Lil Nas X is on some kind of streak — following the provocative success of “Montero,” he’s back with another imaginative music video for his new single “Industry Baby.” With a fundraiser for The Bail Project and a coordinated prison dance that puts Riverdale‘s to shame, Lil Nas X is making all the right moves, and making damn good music while doing it. His mind, it amazes us.

Lorde, “Stoned at the Nail Salon”

Lorde is now in her Norman F*cking Rockwell era with new song “Stoned at the Nail Salon.” Meandering over acoustic guitar, Lorde reminisces prettily on summers gone by and leaving her “hellraiser” past behind. “All of the music you loved at 16 you’ll grow out of,” she muses, exploring what it means to vibe and dream and look back on the past — or just be stoned at the nail salon.

SB19, “Bazinga”

Pinoy-pop boy group SB19 just dropped their debut EP Pagsibol, and on it, the high-energy electronic hip-hop single “BAZINGA.” Flexing their musical muscles, the song feels like six songs in one (and the ending vocalizing is so sticky) — a hallmark of a great 21st century pop smash. We’re excited for more to come from SB19.

Alina Baraz, “Alone With You”

It’s not summer without a sultry track from Alina Baraz. The R&B singer dropped a new song today called “Alone With You” that’s a total mood. Chopped and screwed to perfection, the song is simply about spending time with someone she’s feeling. Whomst cannot relate to this when they find a summer love??\

Khalid, “New Normal”

Khalid is back with the ambient, moving new single “New Normal,” a reflection on pandemic life. The song’s beats and melody have the airy quality of Troye Sivan’s recent hits with that pretty vocal tone all Khalid’s own. The song was “inspired by how I was feeling during the pandemic and the emotional toll that quarantine took on me and my friends,” Khalid said in a statement. “Everything is Changing as an album really takes that a step further with all of the songs centering around trying to find a purpose and a sense of self in a world where everything is digitally connect but emotionally disconnected.”

DPR LIVE ft. BEENZINO, HWASA, “Hula Hoops”

South Korean musician DPR LIVE (part of the DPR collective) released his new EP IITE COOL this week, and among the highlights is a collab with rapper BEENZINO and MAMAMOO member Hwasa. The colorful, bouncy dance track is pure summer delight, with Hwasa proving herself once again as one of the best vocalists of her generation (and it’s her birthday — that’s some excellent Leo season energy). DPR continues to be making some of the most interesting, fun music right now, and we’ll be listening to this EP on repeat all weekend.

Tinashe, “I Can See the Future”

Tinashe truly can see the future. The pop trendsetter returns with prophetic new song “I Can See the Future,” a catchy R&B love song with Tinashe’s signature way of moving through a melody with effortless ease.

Brandon, “Savior Complex”

Rising singer-songwriter Brandon has a gorgeous voice, and he brings it full-throttle to this cover of Phoebe Bridgers’ “Savior Complex.” He imbues Phoebe’s language with so much vulnerability and meaning, giving the song a floaty, rich quality that’s pretty heartbreaking — just as Phoebe intended.
