Taylor Swift Called Simone Biles a “Hero” & Her Response Is So Sweet

We love it when icons from seemingly different worlds link up – and the latest pair to do so are Taylor Swift and Simone Biles.

On August 3, Taylor narrated a spot for NBC to mark Simone’s big return competing at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The gymnast participated in the women’s balance beam final that same day and took home the bronze for Team USA. Simone’s win comes after the athlete decided to withdraw from multiple events at the Games – including the team gymnastics and individual all-around finals  – to focus on her mental health. (Simone has since revealed the unexpected death of her aunt while she was in Tokyo also played a part in her decision.)

“What do we want from our heroes? What do we expect from them? What do we need from them? What happens when they surprise us? When you have the attention of the world, everything you do takes on a bigger meaning. It can be a heavy burden,” Taylor’s voice can be heard saying in the video, as the song “this is me trying,” from her 2020 album Folklore, starts playing in the background. “It can be a chance to change everything. Throughout the last week, her voice has been as significant as her talents. Her honesty as beautiful as the perfection that has long been her signature. But don’t you see, it still is. She is perfectly human. And that’s what makes it so easy to call her a hero.”

The emotional video montage featured images from Simone’s performances and moments at the Games, including her teammates and press coverage. After it was posted, Simone herself took to Twitter to react to the edit. “I’m crying, how special. I love you [Taylor,]” Simone wrote on her account, sharing the clip.

Taylor, wanting to reciprocate the love and level up on the encouragement for Simone, promptly replied. “I cried watching YOU,” the evermore musician replied, quote-retweeting Simone. “I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch you all these years, but this week was a lesson in emotional intelligence and resilience. We all learned from you. Thank you.”
