(G)I-DLE Member Soojin Is Leaving the Group

Seo Soo-jin, known mononymously as Soojin, will no longer be a member of the K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE, parent company Cube Entertainment has announced.

Soojin’s exit from (G)I-DLE comes six months after allegations started to emerge online that the 23-year-old singer had bullied fellow classmates — including actress Seo Shin-ae — in middle school, South China Morning Post notes. As SCMP and Soompi also reported, Cube Entertainment had initially denied the accusations; however, back in March, Soojin did halt her activities with the group. That hiatus lasted until her exit this month.

“First, the agency apologizes for having caused concern through the controversy associated with our artist Soojin,” Cube Entertainment wrote in its statement released on August 14, per a translation by Soompi. “Today, we are announcing the decision that Soojin will be leaving the group.”

Soojin is one of dozens of celebrities in South Korea to face bullying accusations in the past year, after twin volleyball players Lee Jae-yeong and Lee Da-yeong were accused of bullying teammates when they were teenagers, the Washington Post reported. They were removed from the country’s volleyball team ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. In the months since, more accusations have emerged against K-pop idols, actors, and athletes.

Following Soojin’s immediate withdrawal, (G)I-DLE will continue as a quintet. The remaining members are Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua. “We will continue to do our best and provide unstinting support so that (G)I-DLE can show their growth in music and performance,” their parent company also noted in its statement.
