Fall Movie Preview: The Best New Movies Coming Soon

Where to watch: Theaters

In her first major role following the massive success of The Queen’s Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy stars in Edgar Wright’s stylish psychological horror Last Night in Soho. Kiwi actor Thomasin McKenzie plays Eloise, a young fashion student with an eye for the Mod era, as she mysteriously finds herself transported back in time to 1966 London in the body of her idol, a glamorous and alluring nightclub singer named Sandie (Anya). Bathed in the neon lights and smokey underground of London sleaze, Last Night in Soho is a dizzying trip through the decade. These dreamlike visions fuel Eloise’s designs, until the past and present begin to blur together with disturbing and destructive consequences.

And as is the case with all of Wright’s works, expect a perfectly curated soundtrack of ’60s hits. (Seriously, the man loves a good needle drop.)

The Eternals

Release date: November 5

Where to watch: Theaters

The third major Marvel movie of the year, Chloé Zhao’s The Eternals will introduce a new class of heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Eternals focuses on a race of immortal beings with superhuman abilities who have secretly lived on Earth for thousands of years (7,000, to be exact) in order to protect the planet from their monstrous counterparts, known as Deviants. Crazy Rich Asians‘ Gemma Chan leads the cast as Sersi, one of the Eternals.

She’s joined by Angelina Jolie’s Thena, Salma Hayek’s Ajak, Richard Madden’s Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos, Barry Keoghan’s Druig, Lia McHugh’s Sprite, and Don Lee’s Gilgamesh. The film is also a Game of Thrones reunion for Stark bros Richard Madden and Kit Harington, the latter of whom stars as Dane Whitman, Sersi’s human boyfriend and one-third of a potential love triangle between Sersi, Dane, and Ikaris. (Awkward!)

The Eternals has all of the hallmarks of an MCU movie — humor, heart, hot guys, powerful women, cool action sequences, villains with world-ending motivations — but with Oscar winner Chloé Zhao at the helm, The Eternals looks like no other Marvel film that’s come before it. Lush landscapes and cinematic vistas are central to the director’s artistic lens, and even Marvel boss Kevin Feige was amazed by her use of practical locations. The movie basically introduced him to filmmaking, so it must be out of this world.
