Days after releasing her Medusa-inspired music video for “Have Mercy,” Chlöe Bailey stepped into the spotlight to perform the song at VMAs 2021.
Though Chlöe performed solo, Halle Bailey still played a crucial role in her big moment: she introduced her sister’s star performance. “It’s incredible to watch your sister and collaborator find her voice. This year she has stepped into her own artistry, sharing a message of self expression and self love. I’m so so so proud of her, I love you sis,” she said.
And then things were off to the races, as Chlöe took the stage wearing hot pink and dancing to a choir of voices singing her name. She owned the stage in her debut VMAs solo moment, with a fiery backdrop and her name in flames. Her stage presence and impeccable choreo injected some life into the show’s midpoint, and she finished with a lick of the mic. Simone Biles perhaps put it best: “I wanna be Chloe Bailey when I grow up.”
It’s exciting to see Chlöe step into her moment while also supporting her sister and receiving that support in turn — Chloe and Halle clearly share a special bond. “When my sister and I create, we don’t try to dim the other’s light, so the creative process for me has been exactly the same,” Chlöe told Billboard recently. “Now it’s just me in my bedroom. But it was a little scary in the beginning, because [I was used to] having Halle be there to ask, ‘Is this sounding good?’ Having her sign of approval meant so much to me. Now I have to be my own voice and be proud and confident in what I bring to the table.”
