In the weeks leading up to Met Gala 2021, rumors abounded as to whether Addison Rae, the D’Amelios, Emma Chamberlain, and other social media influencers would be attending fashion’s biggest night out. Now, we finally have our answer: mostly yes.
The postponed Met Ball was held on September 13 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, pushed back from its signature first Monday in May. It’s the first Met Gala since 2019, since COVID-19 forced last year’s event to be cancelled. This year’s theme, in tandem with part one of the Met exhibit, is American fashion — and the influencer set certainly came to the red carpet accordingly. (It doesn’t hurt that Instagram is the official sponsor of the 2021 Costume Institute Benefit.)
Below, find out which high-profile social media stars walked the red carpet and what they wore.
In her first Met Gala experience, Addison Rae arrived on the carpet wearing 2003 Tom Ford for Gucci, a blonde lob, and her biggest smile. “I’m shaking in my boots,” Addison told Ilana Glazer on the carpet about her first Met Gala. “I don’t have boots on, but still.”
The influencer, known for recreating TikTok dances, is fresh off her debut movie role in Netflix’s gender-swapped remake He’s All That, in which she played burgeoning influencer and expert meddler Padgett Sawyer. Days prior to her Met Gala appearance, she inadvertently teased she’s be there by responding to fan jokes that Lady Gaga might mistake her for a server during the event. Hey, at least she can laugh at herself.
Beauty YouTuber Jackie Aina also attended Met Gala 2021 in full glamour. And, of course, her look was on point: “American fashion but make it BLACK BARBIE,” she tweeted with photos of her hot pink gown and bombshell blonde hair.
