Naomi Osaka and Saweetie each wore a look that represented their heritage for Met Gala 2021.
Saweetie hit the red carpet for her first year at the Gala wearing a shimmering red Christian Cowan gown with an asymmetrical neckline, cutout bodice, and high slit. The skirt featured two equally shimmery iridescent panels in two distinct color schemes: one in red, white, blue, and yellow, and one in red and black. One panel represented the colors of the Filipino flag, while the other represented the Black American flag. The musician let her dress be the centerpiece of her look and kept her beauty look simple and chic with a platinum bob, dangling diamond earrings, glowing skin, and deep crimson heels that snaked up her legs. Building on the Met Gala 2021 theme, she told an interviewer that the two flags are what make her an “American girl.”
Tennis legend Naomi Osaka, a co-chair at this year’s Gala, donned a Louis Vuitton look that contained elements of her Japanese and Haitian heritage. The aqua and fuschia dress was tied with a thick red obi-style belt and cut high to show off studded black booties, and the entire look was topped off by dramatic black ruffled sleeves that cascaded off the neckline. Naomi wore red eye makeup and matching lipstick and her hair was styled in braids and two accent pieces, all of which were accented with red ribbons to match her makeup.
Both Saweetie and Naomi’s beautiful, statement-making ensembles were a nod to their respective heritages and a gorgeous representation of what it truly means to be an American.
